| Many developed countries in the world depend on individual transportation. Proposed paradigm shifts regarding sustainability with regard to transportation are well intended - and needed - but as individuals, many feel that others can make the change while they stick with their familiar modes of transportation - one that provides the freedom and performance they want and expect.
Cars today with reciprocating engines only utilize about 20% of the energy in each drop of fuel. Much of the loss takes the form of heat lost through the exhaust & radiator and friction in the extra parts needed to convert reciprocating motion of the pistons into circular motion of the output shaft.
To encourage a change in consumption today might include radical new automotive designs, but might best be accomplished through a "bolt-in" replacement to the current reciprocating engine. This replacement would have to be much more environmentally friendly, be able to burn a variety of fuels - particularly renewable fuels - and per the objectives of the Progressive Automotive® X-Prize competition, be able to go in excess of 100 miles for each gallon of fuel burned.
PDT Engines, Inc. proposes to do just that. The PDT design is a true adiabatic hybrid which is intended to bolt in to existing automobiles. It is estimated that the engine will be smaller than current six cylinder reciprocating engines, show a 67% reduction in emissions, get in excess of 120 MPGe and still generate more horsepower than the equivalent six cylinder engines. The new design will bolt right in to current cars and trucks, allowing us to reap the benefits without sacrificing the things we have come to expect in our individual modes of transportation.
