Carbon Dioxide and You!
One Gallon of Gas produces 20 Pounds of CO2 !!!
It seems impossible that a gallon of gasoline, which weighs about
6.3 pounds, could produce 20 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) when burned. However,
most of the weight of the CO2 doesn't come from the gasoline itself, but the
oxygen in the air. When gasoline burns, the carbon and hydrogen separate.
The hydrogen combines with oxygen to form water (H2O), and carbon combines
with oxygen to form carbon dioxide (CO2).
A carbon atom has a weight of 12, and each oxygen atom has a weight of 16,
giving each single molecule of CO2 an atomic weight of 44 (12 from carbon
and 32 from oxygen).
Therefore, to calculate the amount of CO2 produced from a gallon of gasoline,
the weight of the carbon in the gasoline is multiplied by 44/12 or 3.7
Since gasoline is about 87% carbon and 13% hydrogen by weight, the carbon
in a gallon of gasoline weighs 5.5 pounds (6.3 lbs. x .87). http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/co2.shtml
Putting this in Perspective
-
A 4 liter, naturally aspirated car engine running
at 2500 rpm will consume 5,000
liters of air per MINUTE
-
while
a person at rest will breathe 6-8 liters of air per minute.
-
Thus
a car burns as much oxygen in ONE MINUTE as a family of five breathes in
24 HOUR DAY !.
-
An average full grown tree, in one day produces
enough oxygen to sustain a family of five people.
-
How many tree days does it take to supply your
daily commute or, to get to the mall?
-
Is it really worth driving if you've nothing to
breathe?
-
Beneficial effect of trees on the oxygen content
of the air in general is much less important than the capacity of trees
to remove carbon-dioxide from the air, temporarily.
-
When Lavoisier discovered Oxygen in 1778 it measured
20% of the atmosphere by weight. Today it's measured in concentrations of
16% by weight. The air that we breathe contains 25% less oxygen than it
did for the last several hundred years. Tiredness’ syndromes and diseases
might possibly be caused by some individuals being more sensitive to our
oxygen loss than others? Like the canaries miners took down into the Coal
mines, we might just be getting a warning.
At PDT Engines Inc.
we are trying to bring the Air consumption into a much more acceptable equation
and into the realm of families use per Minute. Please help us by contributing,
